Why am I doing this?

Ages ago, when I first got my GSM phone and discovered SMS. I thought the idea of being able to send an Email to a phone was really cool. Eventually, some companies appeared offering just this service. Most charge quite a lot for the privilage. So one day I had nothing much to do, so I thought why not give it a go, so here I am giving it a go.

What's this Fone-E-Mail thing?

For about four months in 1996 I was running ESMS as a free Email to SMS gateway. Anyone could join in simply by giving me their mobile phone number and Email address. I did have about 65 users.

I stopped running the gateway because it was starting to get too expensive and take quite a bit of time. But I decided to continue developing the software.

What does it run on?

It runs on a PC running Windows 3.1, Windows '95 and NT.

What do I need to run it?

You will need:

A PC running Windows 3.1, 95 or NT.
A link to the Internet, either direct or via a modem.
An Email address for the exclusive use by ESMS.
A modem to dial to the GSM service providers.
