ESMS User Instructions

There are two methods of using ESMS

Single Message

Send an Email to ESMS with a subject like this (do not include < or >):

<number>:<message>

Where <number> is the phone number of the mobile you want to send a message to, and <message> is the message. For example, sending a subject of 4438512345:Hello Bill to ESMS will send "Hello Bill" to 4438512345, your Email address will be added to the end of the message. The resulting SMS will look like this Hello Bill:joe@bloggs.co.uk

The phone number must be either a UK Vodafone GSM or UK Orange, or you can send to a Hutchison Message Pager.

For Vodafone, use the international format (44385xxxxx)

For Orange and Hutchison, use the UK format (0973xxxxx)

You may also send HELP or ACCOUNT. These will return a help message or details of your transactions.

Multiple Messages

To use the multiple message capability of ESMS, send your Email to the ESMS Email address as with single messages but put Mult-E-Mail as the subject, your SMS messages are defined in the body of the message. Currently the Mult-E-Mail feature only support two commands. First is Message:, this defines the text of the message to be sent. The second is To:, this defines the mobile number to send to.

For example, if you wanted to invite several people to a party, you could send this message to ESMS:

Message:Party at my house at 8pm, bring a bottle!
To:097312335
To:4438512345
To:4446812345

This would send the message Party at my house at 8pm, bring a bottle! to all three mobiles. Perhaps you are organizing this party with some other friends, then you could send this:

Message:Party at my house at 8pm, bring a bottle!
To:097312335
To:4438512345
To:4446812345
Message:Don't forget the food
To:097612345
Message:Don't forget the CDs
To:0976654321

As before, Party at my house at 8pm, bring a bottle! is sent to 097312345, 4438512345 and 4446812345. But in addition Don't forget the food is sent to 097612345 and Don't forget the CDs is sent to 0976654321.

Another advantage of using this method is that some mail packages limit the length of the subject and thus some messages have been truncated.

Common mistakes are:

  • Putting the To: before the Message:. Doing this will result in all the messages going to the wrong numbers.
  • Having a message that is too long. Please remember that the limit is 160 characters which will include your Email address.
  • Trying to send a message to several mobiles and not putting To: infront of ALL the numbers.
